Travel Tips for Ghana!

 Review the CDC's guidance here:

CDC Prep List

  1. Essentials to Pack: Include lightweight clothing, sunscreen, a power adapter (Ghana uses 240V, Type G plugs), mosquito repellent, a first aid kit, and any necessary medications.

  2. Uber Works: Yes, Uber operates in major cities like Accra, so you can use the app for convenient rides. Order Uber Comfort if you'd like AC in your vehicle.

  3. Best Way to Get Cedi’s: Exchange money at local banks or forex bureaus in Ghana once you arrive. It’s advisable to carry some US dollars with you to exchange at a better rate, especially in cities like Accra.

  4. Passport & Visa on Arrival: Make sure your passport is up to date! If your passport is within 6 months of expiration, you will be stopped at the airport and unable to travel internationally. Hence, renew your passport if needed. Also, you don’t need to apply for a visa in advance if you’re eligible for a visa on arrival. However, you will need to arrange for this by contacting the Ghanaian Embassy or Consulate in your home country prior to departure, and they will send you a document to present once in Ghana. You will then be able to purchase the visa at the airport upon arrival. The cost is typically around $150 USD. Contact the embassy ASAP as well to avoid delay.

  5. Airport Visa Requirement: Make sure to show proof of your visa on arrival at the airport before you board. You should contact the Ghanaian Embassy or Consulate for guidance on the process and confirmation.

  6. Vaccination Requirements: Make sure you're vaccinated for yellow fever, as proof is required to enter Ghana. Bring your yellow vaccination card with you.  Note: It's a good idea to bring prescribed malaria pills with you as a precaution against mosquito-borne illnesses.

  7. Water Safety: It’s best to drink bottled or filtered water during your stay to avoid stomach issues. The tap water may not be treated, so playing it safe with bottled water is a good idea.

  8. Local SIM Card: If you do not have an international cell phone plan, you can buy a local SIM card at the airport or any mobile shop for affordable rates and reliable internet access.

  9. Tipping: Tipping 10-20% is customary in Ghana, particularly in restaurants, unless a service charge is included.

  10. Respect Local Culture: Ghana has a kind, warm, and friendly culture, so polite greetings and respect go a long way. The country is known for being safe, and while it’s always good to be aware of your surroundings, Ghana is recognized for its hospitality and welcoming environment.

Enjoy your trip to Ghana!
